forever frozen in the photo…

Just recently the sports section of our local newspaper ran an article on a girls’ basketball state championship game in 1992 that was won on the last shot by, of course, a local team. The girls were from St. Ursuline High.  Accompanying the article was a wonderful photo, which inspired this poem.

girls battle

for the basketball

wide eyes

mesmerized

just one foot each

on the wooden floor

arms reach

for the prize

hair floats

from their heads

torsos twist

 toward victory

faces as serene

faces as ferocious

as faces painted

on a florentine fresco

I've been writing mostly poetry for many years and have gotten a number of works accepted in publications and anthologies. I'm most interested in communicating with poets for whom craft is a high priority. I enjoy finding and commenting on poetic gems in other people's work. For my own work, I welcome polite comments, whether positive or critical.

    1. thanks for your response, bonnie. yes, even kids can move so beautifully. i think of my mother in a photo with her high school basketball team. big smile. and she was quite proud that when a teacher in a one-room kansas school, she could beat all of her students in a foot-race. what an image!

    1. carrie, if you can see them, then the poem works at least on that level. your observation, “Grace and intent personified” was certainly evident in the photo, which demonstrates the grace and power that athletes can achieve. thanks for your thoughtful response. — michael

  1. I like this, how you’ve painted a fine picture (with your words) of a photo, an action shot no less, and I really do see the comparison to fierce angelic Florentine frescoes, some sort of continuity and connection through the ages, maybe some juxtaposition too of angels and battling athletes (though we did have some battling angels). I do wonder if knowing that the students are from St. Ursuline’s has any bearing on the images in my mind! : ) Happy Weekend! ~ Peri
